It is issued only for trademarked logos and is required by some email providers, most notably Gmail and Yahoo Mail, before they will show your BIMI logo. Without a VMC, those providers will not render the logo even if your DNS record and authentication are correctly configured.

Does BIMI actually improve email deliverability?

BIMI does not directly improve deliverability in the technical sense of getting messages past spam filters. It does not change how mailbox providers score your sending reputation or whether your messages reach the inbox. What BIMI does influence is engagement, and engagement indirectly affects deliverability over time. When recipients recognize your logo, they are more likely to open your message, and higher open rates signal to mailbox providers that your mail is wanted.

The more concrete deliverability benefit comes from the authentication requirements BIMI demands. To implement BIMI correctly, you must have a properly enforced DMARC policy, which means your domain is protected against spoofing and phishing. That protection reduces the chance of malicious mail being sent under your domain, which preserves your sender reputation. In that sense, BIMI encourages the authentication hygiene that genuinely does improve deliverability, even if BIMI itself is the byproduct rather than the cause.

As of 2026, BIMI support has grown substantially but is not yet universal. The major providers that support BIMI logo display include Gmail, Yahoo Mail, Apple Mail, Fastmail, and a growing number of enterprise environments using providers like Google Workspace and Zoho Mail. Gmail and Yahoo Mail require a VMC to display the logo, while some other environments may display it based on DMARC compliance alone.

Providers that do not yet support BIMI will simply ignore the DNS record and show no logo, which means there is no downside to publishing a BIMI record even if your audience is split across supported and unsupported clients. Recipients on non-supporting clients see the same experience they always have, while recipients on supporting clients get the branded logo.
